Shraddha
The 2012 Olympics spells eviction for the generations of Romany Gypsies living in East London and seventeen year old Pearl Penfold is one of them. As the bulldozers close in, Pearl falls in love with Joe, a boy from the local estate. Can Joe prove himself to Pearl and her family before they are gone forever?
Written by Natasha Langridge, Shraddha won the 2010 Meyer-Whitworth Award with great praise:
“It’s thrilling to encounter a playwright who first of all takes the time thoroughly to research an unseen corner of British culture, and then enters so passionately and creatively into the challenges of bringing that story to the stage. Shraddha displays some breath-taking writing and a vivid theatrical imagination; it’s the kind of play that makes you hungry to know what the writer will produce next.” Edward Kemp, Meyer-Whitworth Award judge
Shraddha was first performed to sell-out audiences at the Soho Theatre, London during October and November 2009.
“Great monologues … verbal glitter“ Aleks Sierz, Theatre desk.com
“Moments of pure poetry … faithfully contemporary” The Evening Standard
“Luminous performances … Langridges’ aching lament to a dying people and a lost way of life has potent charm.” Metro
